Placemats and Thanksgiving

A couple months ago we finally bought a new dining table. It’s not that the old one was in disrepair, but it was time to replace it. The table has dark wood on the top and a white base, with six matching chairs. This is all a backstory, leading up to the reason for this thread…

While in Montana, we stopped at an old antique shop, that also had a crazy woman boutique place attached to the shop. The husbands words, not mine, plus that was the name of her boutique. I don’t actually know if she is crazy, or not, but probably. Anyway, back to the reason for this post. In her store, I found bright floral placemats that I needed, since the table is new. I mean, it makes sense, right? And as we walked further into the store, MtnMan saw Thanksgiving placemats, and because that is my absolute favorite day of the year, I felt I needed to buy them, along with a table runner. I have never felt the need for a runner, but it’s Thanksgiving and, well, it truly is the best day of any year, so why not have a piece of matching fabric going down the table.

The crazy woman of the boutique shop asked if we have a big gathering at our place for turkey day, and I looked at MtnMan with crazy eyes, and he chuckled as I said, “pfft! no.” in which the lady replied with, “this must be the first year you’ll have a Thanksgiving at your home.” Again, I looked at MtnMan and replied, “oh no, we don’t have people over at our place, we make cream corn and go over to the sister in laws place.” As I was paying for the 12 placemats and 2 table runners, she asked me why Thanksgiving is so special if I don’t want people in my house. I laughed as I typed that out because it does make me sound far worse than I am, but I told her the reason that day is so magically important to me, as it should be to her (lol), and she politely nodded and took my money. I don’t think she gets it and that’s okay, but now I have placemats to look forward to; I have been domesticated, it appears. Ha!
