Friendsgiving
My favorite day of the year is Thanksgiving; it’s one that was very special when I was growing up. It was never the same, from year to year. It had many changes over the years. In the beginning it was Mom and Granny, in the kitchen baking and cooking up a storm. I didn’t realize how much work it was, until I was much, much older, but they did it with so much passion and excitement. Of course, I was a kid, and the weeks of planning and grocery shopping, all for one meal, might have seemed exciting to me, but not so much to them. But, alas, it’s my memory, so I choose to see it as an exciting time for everyone. Ha! After those years, of Granny helping Mom, we started going to our aunt and uncle’s house. One that adopted us, not actual blood related. They were German, which was something in common with Dad, and they became close friend’s. The family was HUGE, and that as a bit overwhelming, but it became our tradition and it was something I looked forward to. That lasted for a few years, and then Dad and I started volunteering with my Godparents to help feed the community. And then life changed and none of those traditions stuck around. But, I still chose to enjoy Thanksgiving for what it is.
Thanksgiving: It’s a day that is yours to make it whatever you want or need it to be. For me, it changes throughout the years, and what once was experienced around the table, with friends and family, has morphed into spending the day in the mountains with MtnMan and our golden girl, Abby. That’s what we will be doing on Thanksgiving.
While we were in Texas, we had dinner with four people that have become family. They are mine. We had planned to have dinner with them, and it turned out to be a Friendsgiving, and it was beautiful. We had an amazing meal, had drinks, laughed and enjoyed the company of family. You know them. Jo and her Bo, along with Kay and David.
What I’m saying is, Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be a certain day. It doesn’t even have to be what society says it is. You do you, and find your peace and be happy. That’s what Thanksgiving is all about.
