The Month of Pumpkins and Spooky Ghouls

October is finally here (in 3 days), and you know what that means… Halloween is just around the corner! For me, it’s all about the candy, and one sweet treat stands out from the rest: candy corn! There’s something about those tri-colored kernels that brings back fond memories of my childhood. Dad had a sneaky habit of stealing all the candy corn from my Halloween stash. In all honesty though, he didn’t sneak about it. He used the guise of “I need to check the candy to make sure it’s safe and hasn’t been poisoned.” We lived in a small ranching community and there was not one door we knocked…

    The Meaning of Halloween

I love this time of year and to say that Halloween makes me happy is an understatement. Halloween means that Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away and that is truly my reason for this post. You probably thought I was going to enlighten you as to the actual origin of Halloween, or all Hallows eve. Or, maybe I was going to mention that this “holiday” was created hundreds of years ago when the Saints would dress up and go door-to-door, thus trick or treating, while wearing costumes in modern day celebrations. Although all good stuff, leads to more good stuff, and ends on Thanksgiving. So yeah, Halloween has all…

    Candy Corn is a Weakness

I always buy a bag of candy corn after October 1st. It’s a rule. Never before the month of October… until this year. I don’t know what I was thinking, other than the fact that if I were to wait, I might not find a bag on, or after, October 1st and in a spontaneous fit, I snatched the bag up and threw it in the cart. That was fine and dandy, except I opened the bag as soon as we got home and ate handfuls of them while putting groceries away. In the 3 days since, I have ate 3/4 of the bag and I have already put “Candy…

    October: Month of Candy Corn

I have a thing, for lack of better words, about buying a bag of candy corn each year. I won’t allow myself to buy a bag until October 1st and it has to be Brach’s brand. There really is no comparison, I’ve tried a few over the years, and my love of corn of candy dates back to my childhood. It’s true, so many of our likes and dislikes are because of that long ago period in our lives that shaped us into who we are. I like just 1 bag, and enjoy each piece because it’s what I do every October. I was never big on costumes, but Mom…

    Halloween Candy

I am sure that I have posted this before, but with Halloween being right around the corner, it has me curious. What is your favorite halloween candy? Bubba made a good point last week about not all candy counts as halloween candy. So, if it is available year round, it does not count. For example, Snicker Bars. You can pick one up each time you fill up the car at the gas stations, or when you are in the checkout lane at the grocery store. So, those do not count. For me, it is hands down candy corn. I don’t know if I actually like them, like them, or if…

    I Was Olive Oyl

My Halloween costume was Olive Oyl. I was always Olive Oyl. The same plastic apron costume, with the creepy mask. I am sure that I have shared this with you before, but having been online for 12 years and being an active blogger for most of it, I cannot remember. I can’t remember what my twin brother was, but he was probably Popeye, and that is why I was Olive Oyl. I don’t recall ever being a huge fan, although, I did laugh while watching the cartoon shows. In fact, knowing my parents, we did not choose the costumes, it was whatever Mom found at the store the first year…

    #NationalCandyCornDay

I support this hashtag and discovering that it is trending on social media has made my day!  My dad loved him some candy corn! When my twin and I would get home from trick-or-treating he would “check the candy to make sure it is safe to eat.” But, really he just wanted to take all the candy corn out for himself. lol. I forget what granny would grab, and Mom never got in a hurry because she could grab as many caramel pieces as she wanted when we were at school.  Each Halloween, I eat one very small bag of candy corn and I eat caramel all year round!

    Halloween Says Hello November!

I am not a huge fan of Halloween, although, I do understand the fun in it, if you are 6 years old. lol. I admire those who get excited to dress in costume, but it has never been my desire. However, today means that Thanksgiving is in a few weeks and that is reason enough for me to be excited about halloween! Halloween says hello November!

    Costume It Up!

Tis’ the Season to Costume It Up! October is the month for German festivals and beer drinking, but also to costume it up! Are you dressing up for Halloween? If so, who are you for that one day? Are you going to a costume party? Several of our friends are going to costume parties, but Devil is working so I’ll enjoy a quiet Saturday at home. I am looking forward to it, actually.
