Who Were You?

It is Halloween once again, which is no surprise really. It happens once a year, as the calendar days roll by and the months come and go, the Holiday’s will inevitably arrive, like it or not. Believe me, it does not matter if you hate it with passion, the holiday’s happen, regardless of your disdain.

What was your very first costume as a child, and what was your favorite one over the years?

Mine was Olive Oyl and it was a plastic apron, with a mask..

Okay this may shock you…. prepare yourself…. I was a cowboy!!! I had my straw hat, cowboy shirt, jeans, boots, and my cap pistol with holster. Mamma even tied a bandanna around my neck.

I’ve never worn a costume for Halloween. When I was kid it wasn’t such a big deal. Maybe more so in larger towns and cities but I’ve pretty much always lived in the countryside where you rarely got trick or treaters even. It hasn’t been until I’ve got older it has got more prevalent – the Americanisation of many things here in the U.K. I suppose (we even get the schools having proms now, rather than the traditional end of year school discos). So it’s only been really within the last decade that more, shall I say, “fuss” has been made over Halloween… with parties and costumes and the like. Even the pizza delivery guy last night was dressed as a harlequin!

And to be honest I didn’t give two hoots about Halloween before. Lights were off and a sign put up to ward off knocks at the door (even though even now where I live, you don’t get them coming around) and the most I indulged the concept was I’d have discounted sweets to munch on while watching whatever horror movie I could handle they had put on the telly.

But then I went to Walt Disney World two years ago and enjoyed later hours at the magic kingdom due to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. THAT was my level. As much as I bemoaned earlier the Americanisation of activities here in Britain, if I could DISNEYfy anything as much as I already do Christmas… then that is much more up my alley!

And with that little caveat in place – Happy Halloween all!

LOL! It is crazy how certain things, such as Halloween, becomes more prevalent than they once were. I believe social media and the like is to blame for that. We are connected to each other, world wide, more than ever before. No longer do we wait weeks for our pen-pal to respond, nor are we only subject to what is locally important.

I grew up in a small ranching community, but the old folks and “neighborhoods” would turn on their lights for the kids and it was fun, I suppose. I never really got into the costume hoopla and dressing up as someone I am not. I can see why some people find it to be fun, but it is awkward to me and not so much fun.

Thank you for responding! I hope you enjoy your halloween, in the dark, and watching a not-so-scary movie. I plan to ignore the day all together. lol.

I don’t remember a favorite. I remember being able to safely walk thru our neighborhood at night and coming back with a pretty good haul. Seems like a more innocent time back then.

Yes, I agree! We went from door to door, without any concern. The only reason Mom drove us around is because we lived in such a rural area that no one was close. She would drive us to the neighborhoods, drop us off at one end of the street and we would meet her at the other end when we were finished.. and then she’d take us to the next area. It was innocent fun back then. Although, I hated the costume part of it. Just let me knock on the door for free candy. lol.
