Rain in Texas
Texas weather is as unpredictable as it has ever been. It has something to do with the jet stream meeting the gulf stream, but I cannot remember the details. My dad explained it in a way that it made perfect sense, and I have to believe he knew what he was talking about. Or, at least he was so certain that it seemed like he was an expert on the subject.
Last week we had around 10″ of rain from Wednesday through Sunday. It was a slow, steady rain, that soaked into our dry, cracked ground. It was just what we have been needing, and it was a welcome relief. It filled our tank to the brim and our ground was so saturated that when another storm system rolled through we were prepared to have some flooding. However, we had 15″ of rain in just a couple of hours. All roads were closed, even the main highway and most low lying areas because a raging river.
The field in front of our house was under water, but because we’re at the bottom of several hills, we tend to take on a lot of water in all directions. Thankfully, we have built our homestead with that in mind, so most of it is diverted around and in between buildings.
After the rain stopped and the water subsided, I slipped on rain boots and walked the property. Mother nature is an amazing beast! It looks like we had water rising up a few feet in areas and there is a path of debris all over the place. Some trash from neighbors, that’s not unusual, and we even had a few scrap pieces of wood wash out from underneath the house.
It makes me wonder what else has been unearthed after this recent rain storm. This is a close second to what we experienced in May, so we might be out of the drought, once again, and with winter approaching, we may very well stay above the drought scale for a few months. That gives me hope! I really do not want to experience another summer of drought, although, it is inevitable. If not in 2016, most likely the following year will be drought stricken. It is what happens in Texas. We go from one extreme to the next… and then back again.
